Routine water system maintenance set to begin Oct. 5 in Brattleboro

The maintenance will be carried out in different parts of the system over the coming weeks as weather, operations, and scheduling allow.

Work on the town’s drinking water network is scheduled to get underway during the week of Oct. 5, with crews from the Brattleboro Department of Public Works Utility Distribution Division carrying out preventative maintenance at locations across the system.

The effort will include flushing dead-end water mains, testing and operating valves, and checking fire hydrants. Town officials say the work is part of standard upkeep meant to keep the water system functioning dependably.

Although residents should not lose water service during the project, they may notice brief changes in water pressure or water that appears cloudy or discolored while crews are working. That can happen when hydrants and valves are used and sediment in the system is stirred up.

Some water may also be seen flowing into streets, drainage areas, or from hydrants during the maintenance. Officials say that is normal for this type of work and should not be mistaken for a broken water main.

If tap water becomes discolored, residents are advised to let cold water run for several minutes until it clears. Drivers may also encounter DPW personnel near hydrants, valves, and roadway work zones, so caution is urged in those areas and any temporary traffic patterns should be followed.

The maintenance will be carried out in different parts of the system over the coming weeks as weather, operations, and scheduling allow. For more information, contact the Department of Public Works at 802-254-4255 or email Chris Severance at cseverance@brattleboro.gov.
